HONORING LEANDRO L. ALEJANDRO
Died, 19 September 1987
Privilege Speech
Rep. Lorenzo R. Tañada III
17 September 2007
“The struggle for freedom is the next best thing to actually being free,” is one of my favorite quotes from a student leader and a dear friend who made an impact on the lives of the student activists of the 1980’s. He was one of the two prominent personalities who were extra-judicially killed or executed immediately after EDSA I. On Wednesday, the 19th of September, the protest movement and civil society would be commemorating the 20th death anniversary of Leandro L. Alejandro or simply “Lean” to those who marched with him in the “parliament of the streets”.(more..)

Sen. Aquino's Privilege Speech
Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, on this day in 1983, my father, Ninoy Aquino, was summarily executed on his return from exile in the United States.
What happened on the tarmac of the Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983 would push an entire country to demand its right to democracy and freedom. It was the beginning of a new chapter in this country’s history. It was also the day that heralded our quest for justice in his name.

POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR
THE SUMMIT ON EXTRA-JUDICIAL KILLINGS
BY SENATE MAJORITY LEADER KIKO PANGILINAN
As delivered in Manila Hotel, on July 16, 2007
during the National Summit on Extra Judicial Killings
We laud the Supreme Court for taking this initiative to seek solutions to the growing concern over the spate of killings facing our constitutional democracy. The decision of the Supreme Court to call this summit is unprecedented but I would go on to say that it is precisely this ‘outside the box’ thinking that we need from our national leaders so that we may find concrete and long term solutions to decades old problems that our nation continues to grapple with, quite a number of which with very little success. I recall in a public debate during the last elections the issues we had debated on were the following 1) insurgency and the peace talks 2) corruption 3) deteriorating quality of education, and 4) Crime. In the course of the debate, I had come to realize that the issues we were tackling then were the very same issues we had tackled when I was President of the UP Student Council in 1986.
